Eighteen to twenty year olds have the highest driving insurance risk factors and usually higher car insurance costs. Here we find ways of improving the statistics and making car insurance cheaper.

There were 7,017 convictions in one recent year for dangerous driving, or causing death or bodily harm by dangerous driving. Around 2,400 of the charges were for men in the 18 to 20 year old age group. These two offences are the most serious non-alcoholic related ones which can be committed.
Male drivers in this 18 to 20 group represent just 3% of the driving population. In the same age group, women were responsible for convictions amounting to 1%
If you include the offence classed as careless driving the figures show that young men aged between 17 and 20 were responsible for around 7,500 convictions, out of 37,512.
Young male drivers are estimated to be more than 60 times more liable to be involved in a serious accident, resulting in injury or death, after 11pm.

Youngsters just dont have the experience to cope with night driving conditions. Empty roads seem to stretch ahead like Brands Hatch and the temptation to see just how fast they can go gets the better of them. Control of the car is lost and the result is all too often horrific. Put a gang of mates in the car spurring the driver on and the outcome doesnt bear thinking about. Norwich Union and MoreThan are making a valuable contribution to the peace of mind of parents with the introduction of new, limited form of insurance cover, which will contribute to keeping down both the cost of insurance for these young men and the white hair syndrome of their long suffering parents.

MoreThan has decided to tackle the problem by the introduction of a policy which restricts driving, basically, to between the hours of 6am and 11pm. The cost of driving during these hours will incur a charge of £25 per journey. Norwich Union has decided that as they consider young men are a whole ten times more likely to come to grief after 11pm, they too are going to target this.
