Reducing Car Insurance Costs
New measures should help reduce the statistics for accidents - here we discuss what changes have been made, and hopefully what they should achieve!
Being able to drive is a useful skill and one many school leavers are keen to acquire. Unfortunately, theres one thing that may take the shine off the joy of passing the driving test for young male drivers, and thats the cost of their insurance. This group has been shown to be the most at risk for accidents, and so the premiums for young men are among the highest of all. The risk is especially high in the night time, between 11pm and 6am.
Parents are keen to have their children learn this useful ability, as it teaches independence and confidence. Not to mention that years of being Mum or Dads Taxi Service can get a little wearing of course! Parents often help to foot their childs insurance bill, and everyone benefits. As things stand, those with daughters do a little better cost-wise, but is there anything else parents of teenage boys can do? Read on … (house insurance)
When you look at the statistics, young men are a shocking 62 times as likely to get a convictions for dangerous driving as their sisters. From a total of more than 7,000 dangerous driving convictions causing death or bodily harm, 33% were attributed to young men between 17 and 20 years of age. (home insurance)
Most of these accidents take place during the hours of darkness. Between 11pm and 6am, the chances of this most at-risk group having an accident increase tenfold. This is in part due to one simple fact: most driving lessons take place in the daytime. Faced with the chance to open up a bit on a seemingly quiet night-time road, maybe to impress friends riding with them, or to see what the car can do, some young male drivers cant resist, with tragic consequences. The majority of these accidents do not involve other vehicles - they are simply down to a lack of experience.
Insurers More Than have taken these facts to heart and are cross-selling their new DriveTime policy to parents who phone their call centre. Its hoped that the benefits of leaving the car at home during the times of highest risk will go hand in hand with lower accident statistics. Drivers between 18 and 25 who opt for this policy will agree not to drive between 11pm and 6am, in return for premiums of 40% less - a big saving. The premium works like this: the total cost is calculated on the usual criteria of age, experience, type of vehicle etc. Then the reduced rate is fixed at around 60% of this total.
