Young Drivers Car Insurance

The number of young drivers killed on Britains roads is concerning so the Association of British Insurers has launched a set of proposals to tackle the problem

It is widely known that young drivers are a risk on the roads. Not only do they risk their own lives behind the wheel more often than older drivers, but it is often the case that other young passengers in their vehicle die in fatal crash with them. In fact, young male drivers are ten times more likely to be injured on the roads. According to the charity Brake, there were 151 teenage car drivers killed in Great Britain during 2005 and for the 20-29 age group, that number leapt to 291 in the same year. That is not to mention the thousands who are injured.

So in response to these figures, the Association of British Insurers is trying to tackle the problem by launching a scheme involving a range of proposals. The scheme is backed by the RAC Foundation, the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety and road safety groups Brake, Roadsafe and Make Roads Safe Campaign. (car insurance information)

The scheme involves four proposals. Firstly, the ABI is urging the Government to make it law for young drivers to have a one-year minimum learning period before they take their driving test. The organisation hopes that this would cut 1000 fatalities a year. (loans information)

Another proposal is to put in place a structured learning programme where learners would have to have their instructor keep a logbook of time spent driving and the experience they have before taking the test.

The third initiative would involve a rule to reduce the number of passengers that a young driver carries in their vehicle during their first few months of driving. Afterall, experience in places like California and elsewhere where these rules are in place has shows this cuts casualties dramatically. And finally, as in other countries around the world, young drivers who have only recently gained a drivers licence would not be allowed to drive at night - the time when over half of the accidents involving young drivers take place. Youll find that some insurance firms already offer lower premiums to young drivers who only get behind the wheel during the day. (find a loan)
